Margaret River Day 1: Busselton Jetty, Cowaramup

A note before we get started: CARRY YOUR SUNSCREEN WITH YOU IN WA SUMMERS. I am so very sunburnt today.

We started out at 8am to ensure we beat the traffic and had time to wander around Busselton foreshore before our jetty train trip to the underwater observatory. We have both been to Busselton before but don’t really remember it as it was many years ago….and we had never been on the jetty train!

The drive from Perth was about 2hrs 40 mins and we arrived with plenty of time so had some nibbles and drinks at the Shelter Brewing Company. It did seem very decadent to enjoy a cider and a beer at 10:30am. Normal people would sit there and “people watch” but I dog watched instead….so many dogs! The views around the brewery and foreshore are lovely. We didn’t go in the water (a bit cold) but there were lots of kids swimming in the enclosed beach net and jumping off the platforms.

The jetty train (return trip) and underwater observatory tour cost was $36 each to prebook online. The trips going out there still had a few tickets left when we arrived but as it’s school holidays and summer, they were very close to full. The train is electric and solar powered – very cool. It takes you the length of the jetty (1.8kms) with a little commentary about the local area as you travel. At the other end of the jetty is the underwater observatory which is one of only six in the world.

When you get off the train you head inside for your observatory tour. I felt this part was a bit unorganised while we were there – the guide kept telling everyone to be quiet and stay with her as we circled down but there wasn’t enough space on each landing as the tour had so many people so neither kids or adults were listening to her. We ended up staying at the back of the group and just coming down one level at a time behind them. It is very interesting to learn about the artificial reef and how it attracts the fish, you also get to see the fish swimming around and how they change as the levels change while looking through viewing windows. They told us there is a “special needs” seal who sometimes comes and says hello but we didn’t get to see her.

They give you an hour at the observatory but even if you stop at every level and look at each window it won’t take that long. We ended up with 40 mins left so walked up to the end of the jetty for some photos and then waited to catch the train back. Quite a few people from our train opted to walk back the 1.8kms rather than wait ages but I had forgotten sunscreen so we just waited in the shade instead.

We then headed onwards to Margaret River! We stopped at Candy Cow in Cowamarup (a town which embraces its name through the placement of SO MANY GIANT COW STATUES around the place) and bought some snacks while cow-spotting just a few of the 42 life sized fibreglass cows in the local herd.

We are spending the first few nights at an air bnb at Margaret’s Forest Holiday Apartments right in the centre of town. Even though it’s in the town centre, it’s surrounded by bush and is very quiet. There are two balconies we can sit on to enjoy nature (and wine) as well as a fully self contained kitchen. The pricing was very reasonable at $149 a night.

Dinner tonight was prebooked at “Morries” which came highly recommended for their tapas selection and cocktails. Morrie’s was about a 9 min walk from our accomodation at the “other end” of the town strip. They were full (Saturday night) so I was glad we had booked and they also have a 2hr window to be aware of. We tried 4 of their cocktails between us and they were all very good – properly made and no “glossing over” the alcohol amounts. We also tried 4 different tapas dishes and our thoughts are below. We give this place an 8/10 and would return. Bs only issue was the pork belly and mine was the same issue at every place down here – which is they are seriously understaffed so service is a bit of a disaster.

  • Croquettes: mmmm cheesey melty goodness
  • Pork belly: the sauce was nice but the pork belly bites were a little dry
  • Beef cheeks: this dish was melt in your mouth delicious
  • White chocolate brownie dessert: even with a GF brownie this was still pretty good

MICF 4th year (day 1): Upfront and The Red Hummingbird

After we arrived and checked in at our epic room at Rydges (ummm hello giant spa bath) we immediately went in search of a supermarket to stock up on bubble bath and snacks. Mostly bubble bath.

Dinner was at a rooftop bar called The Red Hummingbird and was tapas style – yum. This was only my second rooftop bar experience in Melbourne and it was nice, although a bit annoying you can’t eat food near the edge as it’s a smoking area 🙄 how about you just ban the smokers eh? The house drinks were $6-$7 though and the food was good and well priced.

Out first comedy show for this trip was one we haven’t been to before – Upfront. it’s a 140min recorded gala event at The Town Hall with an all female line up.

The blurb says: The queens of comedy join forces to deliver whip-smart laughs, lip, charm and chat in classic Upfront style! An epic night that sees the scene’s most irreverent comics shattering stereotypes and raising the roof. Strap in for a line-up that has fists held high and fingers firmly on the pulse. Girl power!

Hosted by Geraldine Quinn’s Spandex Ballet and featuring Fringe Wives Club, DeAnne Smith (CAN/USA), Jude Perl, Becky Lucas, Steph Tisdell, Geraldine Hickey, Celeb Five (Sth Korea), Felicity Ward, Mel Buttle, Nikki Britton, Cal Wilson, Anne Edmonds, Sam Jay (USA), Alice Snedden (NZ), Fern Brady (UK), Eleanor Tiernan (IRL), Flo & Joan (UK), Sarah Keyworth (UK), Rosie Jones (UK), Kirsty Webeck, Double Denim and Nina Oyama.

Highlights from the performances for me were: Rosie Jones and her on point delivery about living with a disability…I loved that she had so many great punchlines that worked with her CP delivery style! I also really enjoyed the musical acts including Double Denim and Flo and Joan. This was also a very inclusive, very LGBTQI+ positive lineup and that was reflected in the audience as well which was fabulous to see.

B said he enjoyed himself even though the humour was very female oriented, he didn’t have a specific highlight but said he would certainly go again next year if it was on while we are here….so that’s the equivalent to a rave review from a man of few words!

Day 6: Last day in Barcelona and meeting our intrepid travel group for the Barcelona to Rome Intrepid Adventure (15 days)

Despite our best effort, sleeping in was a bust. We were down at breakfast by 8am and then the process to sort out our booking transition was much easier than the trip advisor reviews led us to believe – we handed over the old room cards, settled the room bill and they reissued new ones. No problems! We had to do this because we are now officially on day 1 of our intrepid tour…weeeee. Day 1 is mostly people arriving at the hotel from their home country though so it’s still an exploring day for us.

Little exploring was done though. After breakfast we did some hand washing then…had a siesta. Post-siesta we went back to Les Ramblas for people watching and delicious sangria, cerveza (beer) and pizza. Mmmmm. Plus churros and chocolate sauce. More mmmm. Sine we then had until 7pm until our meet and greet, we siesta-d some more. Basically, it was an extremely lazy day.

We met our very small intrepid group at 7pm. It consists of us, a couple from Canada around our parents age (at a guess) and another young lady from Australia on her first overseas trip. We have a fifth person joining us in a few days as well. Our tour guide is Andrea and he’s from Italy, he seems very well travelled and has been working for intrepid for 3 years. After our brief run through it was back to bed/dinner/exploring for the group before a 10am checkout tomorrow. We took the bed option….a very, very lazy day!

Steps taken: 6905

Kilometres walked: 4.8km

Tomorrow: As a group, we are off to Ribes de Freser to explore the Nuria Valley

Mel

P.S. No wifi for the next few days so will upload more posts and what I’m guessing will be some pretty photos once we return to civilisation 🙂

Day 5: Touristing around Barcelona and then boobies (not mine…obviously…)

Day 5 started very early after the siesta fail and an epic 12 hour sleep. We had finished breakfast by 7:30am and were on our way to be tourists. First stop was the Arc de Triomf where the view was obscured by some car show that was setting up.

Then we walked up to the Parc de la Ciutadella and explored. As it was so early we had to play dodge the homeless person, but we got to see the Cascada monument which was quite impressive…and a giant mammoth. The parks themselves were very pretty as well.

We then walked through the gothic quarter to check out where Picasso used to live and down to the waterfront where the aquarium is.

gothic quarter

the aquarium is apprently the largest in europe…but nothing compared to sea world etc. So heads up that you may be disappointed with your 20€ spend

After the aquarium it was back up to the gothic quarter to find Euskal Etxe which is a tapas bar where you pay by the toothpick omnomnom.

A short metro trip brought us back to the hotel where I had a rest for awhile as I seem to have hurt my back from walking all the hills yesterday. Yay for arthritis in my spine making itself known at inopportune moments. Grrr.

After our rest it was off to the cabaret show at El Molino! We were prepared with what we had worked out from the Internet: it was naughty but interesting, it was all spoken in Spanish, they were likely to include us once they realised we didn’t know Spanish and it was in the middle of the party district of L’Eixample.
We got there early and found dinner in a local restaurant…first time trying paella and it was tasty. The half a litre of cava sangria certainly topped it off haha.

After dinner at Bar Stage we walked 2 mins up the road to the show. It’s well worth being early as it determines your seat! While lining up for the show we had the brief intro performance (yes, that is ladies dancing under the windmill) and then we were able to go in. Showing our sms ticket which we bought 2 days ago for 50€ (that got us 2 entry tickets + a bottle of cava) was enough to get in where we were targeted straight away as non spanish speaking and sat in the very front row. The show was fabulous and even though the MC spoke in Spanish, she included us. I had a half naked guy on my lap for a kiss and B had a lady in lingerie use him as a seat so we were both happy at the end! The agreed highlight was the aerial performance with silks. That lady was amazing.

Steps today: 24102

Kilometres: 16.9km

Tomorrow: I have no idea, I drank 1/2 a litre of sangria and then shared a bottle of cava (sort of a mix between champagne and passion pop). Sooooo tomorrow is for sleeping as far as I am concerned right now!
