Leaving Italy – final thoughts

Favourite things about Italy (Pisa, Cinque Terre, Florence, Sienna, Rome. Venice and Naples):
– B says the CT trail was amazing and a definite must do. I have to admit even just going between villages on the ferry, the views were stunning. The regional wine is also pretty fab!

– Florence is still one of the most beautiful cities I have ever been to. B asked me to add that the pastries in Florence are delicious! Breakfast every day is an adventure.

– Climb the bell tower in Florence (not the Duomo, which is crowded and terrifying) as well as the facade in Siena. Both have amazing views of the surrounding city and countryside. Breathtaking.

– Venice was amazing and a must see. In particular we went on a gondolier trip with the most amazing gentleman. He only charged us 120€ for almost an hour, gave a running commentary, took about 90 photos of us and also directed us to a supermarket so we could bring our own wine, no hassles! Can not recommend him enough, you can find him at this location:

– The restaurant we went to on the first night in Rome (see pics on the day 19 post ) was unbelievably good! Well done Rome. It’s also amazing to walk around all these old ruins and constructions and see just how detailed they were. Something we just can’t do in Australia really! We were so lucky with the weather.

– The food we had in Naples was amazing and cheap, definitely less tourist pricing here than in other areas we visited. Loved the local colour we had by staying in Toledo, although it could be a little overwhelming at times.
Not-so-good stuff about Italy (Pisa, Cinque Terre, Florence, Sienna, Rome, Venice and Naples):

– The goddam tourists in CT were horrendous and we were pretty much in off season. I know, I know…I’m a tourist too! But I mean the absolute masses of people that were just behaving like inconsiderate muppets. Blocking entrances, shoving to get photos, not moving for other people, causing huge delays on the paths by refusing to allow people to pass them….argh. I love the intrepid travel “responsible travel” ideal but I’m not quite sure how supporting this element of CT falls into that category! To be fair, we did stay in a local town and supported small business with our accommodation choice and restaurant options however.

– Still not a huge fan of Pisa, very over-rated in my opinion. All very gimmicky and it is 18€ just to climb the tower! Which we didn’t do….although Percy may have tried hehehe

– Everywhere we have been in Europe there are a lot of smokers. Being Australian, where it is rapidly becoming less common, we struggle with the smell, the constant ignorance of no smoking signs and just the rudeness of it as there is no consideration for others when they blow smoke in your face. Since we have both been unwell travelling through Italy (interesting how both times I’ve been to Europe, I have ended up with a very nasty chest infection…hmmm) the prolific smoking has become something we both identified as a turn off for us here.

– Other than the gondolier (mentioned above), the really good restaurant and the amazing scenery…unfortunately not much was good about the people/service in Venice. The hotel management and staff were absolutely appalling (worst review I have ever left on trip advisor), staff in the attractions were rude and don’t even get me started on the baggage check guy! Gah. I know Italy has a certain reputation but Venice takes the cake in that regard.

– I still maintain the Vatican museum in Rome is the most overrated tourist experience ever. I refused to go this time around and B did, he shared my sentiments.

– Naples traffic. Holy crap. All the things you read online are NOT an exaggeration. It’s literally every person for themselves and it is terrifying…this gives you a 50 second example of some of it: http://youtu.be/7gYa-gdy22I

– B wants me to add that he has named Italy the land of scaffolding, smoking and shit service. Ha!

Day 22: The Colosseum, The Vatican and Naples

More Rome exploring today. After a late night because a school group checked in to Hotel Stella (I will admit, I took great pleasure in slamming our hotel room door at least 17 times at 7am this morning…) we were off to the Colosseum! We explored both the Colosseum and the Roman Forum in the morning, beating the majority of the crowds.

roman forum

ripped my 3/4 leggings so having to pair loose pants with joggers….ever the fashion icon! Haha

Then we caught the metro (with a line change, gah) to the Vatican Museum. That took about 40 mins for anyone planning this as a future option. B had pre bought his ticket and I had opted to skip it altogether since I have been before and walk down the street to Castel Sant’Angelo. B thought “the Vatican Museum was kinda cool with all its art and stuff but the Sistine Chapel was significantly underwhelming”. He didn’t go to the St Peter’s Basilica as the line was ginormous.

cool statue

pretty ceiling (not the sistine chapel, he ignored my request for a sneaky pic!)

My experience at the castle was a bit of a fail, beautiful to look at but apparently closed on Mondays…although their website doesn’t say that! On the plus side, I had time to go to the post office and send postcards to the Donaldson clan and B’s mum.

panorama of the castle

bridge near the castle (i walked over this last time i was here! there is a photo of Percy hanging out with the castle in yhe background waaaaay back on my blog)

Instead of castle exploring, I sat in the shade and read a travel swap book while eating gelato. Two of my favourite things combined 🙂

We met up again and spent an hour people watching near the Spanish Steps, the guys trying to rip people off with “free” flowers are absolutely fascinating. At 5pm it was off to Naples! The train ride this time had been pre booked months ago and we must have scored a higher class as there was free chips and wine. I was a happy camper.

Our hotel here (Hotel Toledo) is three stops on the metro out of the central area and seems to have a lot of local character. Dinner was delicious at Pizza e Baba.

entree: mozarella and prosciutto (my go to entree now) with local wine, napoli pizza and risotto

Laying in bed now with the window wide open I can hear restaurant owners shouting, children playing and lots of scooters honking as they zoom up and down the cobblestones. Lovely.

Steps today: 28000! Crazy

Tomorrow: POMPEII!!!

Mel

P.S. Apparently self service laundromats are not a thing in Naples. Seriously. Google supports this, lots of other equally confused bloggers out there too. Just hand washed all my travel knickers in the sink (they are made for that but I have been lazy and had a backlog) and we are sniff testing our shirts….

6 more sleeps to my birthday!

Day 19: Rome!

Off to Rome today! We caught the bullet train (300km an hour) direct to Roma Termini which took about an hour and a half. Our hotel is very close to the train station. New pet hate: street sellers who put things into your lap and then tell you to pay for it…or push it into your hands while touching you. Mel’s solution: it alternates between dropping the item on the floor, shoving back, or shouting NO BUGGER OFF loudly and in a very off putting way. Success varies for all methods.
We have done a bit of a sneaky and are room sharing with someone tomorrow night. We will be in Venice but still have the room for the luggage and to save checking out and back in the next day…so to save her spending her last night in a crappy hostel, we are loaning her the room key on the sly. Sneeeeaky. Very Australian! Haha.

We started our first afternoon in Rome with a walking tour courtesy of our intrepid leader, it was a very long tour! We started at the Spanish Steps which unfortunately were closed for works, but from the side you can hardly tell (lol) and the best part of this photo was no tourists on them!

We then visited a bakery that makes the best Tiramasu in Italy (apparently) and B gave it a big thumbs up.

That was the point where Andrea (our leader) told us he would take us to the three best gelato places in Rome so we could compare. Pretty sure it was meant to be a joke but I took him literally….

gelato place 1: il gelato disan crispo.

gelato place 2: Grom

gelato number 3: Fatamorgana

The verdict? I thought number one was best but number three was a close contender.

Aside from gelato, we also explored some well  known sites in Rome including the Trevi fountain, Piazza Novona, a number of cathedrals, the Pantheon, the Parliament, the colloseum and others. We saw a political protest which was pretty cool. It was a beautiful warm afternoon wandering in the sun and a nice cool evening.

this is a pretty picture taken at last light near the palace

After our walk, we had a short rest and then it was off to our final dinner with our intrepid group. We did the whole envelope/card tip collection thing on the sly and Andrea (Andy!) was happy. The food at Hostaria da Vincenzo was delicious and very well priced, I highly recommend it.

prosciutto and mozzarella

veal for both mains omnomnom

lemon meringue pie and a dessert that started with M and had two double L’s in it!

limoncello to finish

We finished this feast with a leisurely walk back to the hotel and lots of goodbyes. There were hugs. I’m a terrible hugger dammit.

Steps today: 22571

Kilometres: 15.6kms

Tomorrow: VENICE! Looking forward to a romantic gondala ride with my special someone 🙂

2015 Adventures!!

Woohoo 2015 adventures ahoy!

So this year I get to have two grand overseas trips. One was planned at the end of last year and is a 4.5 week jaunt through Barcelona, Rome, Naples and Paris in October/November. The second has been a little unexpected (read: last minute) and will hopefully see me adventuring to the USA for 10 days in late June.

So first, let’s talk about Europe. We jet off on October 12th to Barcelona and after a few days lounging in the sun we will join up with our intrepid tour. This will see us traveling for 15 days from Barcelona through a variety of locations across to Rome. After fare-welling our tour and a few extra days in Rome, we will head to Naples which puts us nice and close to both Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius. A few nights later it will be up to Paris for 5 nights, including attending the Moulin Rouge to celebrate my 30th birthday! Entering the age of denial in style.

Intrepid tours are a company I am not familiar with but B has done a very extended one before and had a lot of positive things to say. Their online reviews are positive and the idea of a small tour appealed to me although I am not sure how I will cope with the reliance on public transport to get from one city to the next, as opposed to say…an air conditioned coach. We have chosen one of the more relaxed tours (no camping etc) although they did have all sorts of trips for all sorts of interests and budgets.

The USA trip is a little more haphazard as it will be planned and booked very last minute. B is likely to be heading away for work over there for a few months so I get to go visit…hooray! The visit has been timed around my work commitments which is why it will be about a month into his work trip rather than closer to the end. At the moment it is actually still not fully confirmed as I can’t book my flights until he has the work go-ahead but it is looking likely. He will be based in the Washington area so there will be lots of exploring of Washington as well as 5 nights in New York! EEEEEE! Do you guys realise what is in Washington? Do you? DO YOU? Let me show you….

Not to mention…NEW YORK!! Very exciting. Probably our last year of travel adventures for a while (although South America and Antarctica/The Arctic are still high on the want list) so time to make the most of it. Did I mention that there will be bears in the US? Baby bears? Baby pandas? Did you see that?

Since Europe is mostly booked and paid for and the USA is still a “wait and see” operation….

The big discussion in our house is around luggage choices at the moment.

Neither of us are super happy with our suitcases but I am not prepared to fully commit to a backpack and B is not prepared to let me just have a suitcase on the intrepid tour as we are relying on trains to get around a fair bit. Stubborn man. So at the moment we are both spending a lot of time reading and researching. This is my front runner – the 80L Osprey Sojourn convertible wheeled bag although there are a lot of other similar things that cost less (but seem to break easy). He is a mad Osprey lover whereas I am new to their products….so we shall see.

Mel Update: No USA trip ended up happening…but Europe looms!

Day 13 – Rome to Tuscany to Florence

Very short entry today as I am using hotel wifi in the lobby. We left Rome early this morning with some very hungover people on the bus and headed to Tuscany. The first part of the drive was 3 hours and I was fine – we stopped for services (peeing and food) and then had another hour to go to Tuscany. The roads turned into windy mountain roads and our bus driver was a fill in one who drove like a crazy person, I came so close to throwing up on the bus! Had the plastic bags ready to go and all.

Tuscany was beautiful, we stopped at a vineyard and most of us sampled wine, bread and olive oil. It was in the Chianti region so made legit chianti wine which was tasty. I only had a few sips and sat out in the fresh air for the rest of the winery tour. It was then back on the bus to Florence (only an hour thank goodness, still feeling quite gross from more windy roads) and on to our hotel.

Which is the worst one by far!

We are in a tiny little room crammed in to a corner with ten other tiny little rooms where you can hear the guy 3 doors down roll over. The aircon doesn’t work at all either and the toilet is about a metre from my bed. It is by far the crappiest hotel yet and as Amelia and Claire said “I don’t want to be murdered in my bed”. Me either girls!

The plan for tonight Is dinner, karaoke and partying hard. I think my plan will be dinner and bed…until 1am when all the people in the rooms around us come back. Ahhhh contiki, you’re classy.

I can’t say much about Florence yet as aside from the auto park hotel we haven’t seen any of it! Tuscany was very pretty though and the wine was delish.

Day 12 – Rome!

I ate so much food today! Mmmm.

It was a “no bus” day for the tour so we had to find our own way around Rome. We are staying about 30mins out of the city so it is a bit of a hike…we left the hotel at 8:30am and our guide hannah walked us to a bus stop where all of us (about 45) got on the bus…then a train…then swapped to another train! Miraculously we all made it in one piece. We started with the Vatican City tour which was the most expensive tour we have done to date (€33). I am assuming that includes the entry price though so when you consider that it probably isn’t too pricey. The Vatican is crazy – so many people just shuffling along looking at stuff and some of the tourists are unbelievably rude and just shove you out of the way. One of the boys on our tour took pity on me being trampled by a nasty Japanese man and elbowed him out of my way 🙂 I still owe him a beer for that! Other than the shuffling it was amazing. The sistine chapel just blew my mind and saint peters basilica was so big, so beautiful and so detailed.

The Vatican tour took about 2.5hrs and after it out main priorities were to pee, to sit down and to eat. We made it about 50m from the Vatican and collapsed at a roadside pizzeria where we ate pizza AND pasta for lunch – then gelato for dessert. Such fatties. After a rest we felt better and abandoned our hastily (lazily) formulated plans for public transport and instead opted to walk from one end of Rome city to the other so we could see the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum and the Roman Forum in daylight. With our trusty map reader Amelia leading the way we were off! Our first stop was the Pantheon and as it was day time we got to see inside, it is an active church and although I am not a religious person, I was impressed. The detail is amazing and there was a choir singing hymns which worked so well with the acoustics of the building. Next up we wandered to the Trevi Fountain which had looked amazing last night but in the day time it was even better…I threw in two coins which means 1) I will return to Rome one day and 2) it will be with a lover! Go me. By this point we were tired, grumpy, full of water and sweaty so after a 35min wait to pee (I swear, there is one public bathroom in all of Rome and it is in McDonalds) we slowly plodded onwards. Amelia navigated the back streets and when we suddenly popped out in view of the Colosseum there was much rejoicing! We opted to line up which was quicker than I thought (only 22mins) and wander through without a tour.

I think we spent well over an hour at the Colosseum. The views, the photo opportunities and the feeling of walking through something almost 2000 years old was just amazing. We sat down for awhile and just relaxed while soaking in the views. So far the Colosseum has been my favourite thing to have experienced in all of Europe.

We took photos at the roman forum and walked up a side street were we ate dinner at a street cafe nearby, we had beautiful views of the Colosseum. After a really long day we all rewarded ourselves with a few drinks…and more gelato! It was then off to navigate the train and bus home which was surprisingly painless. I was so excited that we arrived back just as the laundry guy rocked up which means I have lovely fresh, clean PJs to sleep in.

We came up to the room and sat around for a bit and then decided we felt like losers as it was only 8:30pm. We went back downstairs to the bar and one of the Canadian boys on the tour bought us a drink, so we socialised with them for awhile…they are all good fun but had been drinking all day so had a good head start on us. It’s almost 10pm now and I think bed time very soon as I am exhausted.

Tomorrow we are off to Florence and will see the leaning tower of Pisa on the way!

There are lots of photos for today as I took so many. There was just so many amazing things to see….

Day 11 – Venice to Rome

Another travel day, another sore butt! This one was not as long as some of the others (7hrs in total on the actual bus plus 2.5hrs of stopovers) but it was probably the worst as I got nasty motion sickness and one of the boys threw up on the floor of the bus. Yep.

We left Venice bright and early with yet more seat stealing (I’ve yet to have mine taken, I am not sure how I’ll react when it happens – I guess a massive temper tantrum lol) and some very hungover people on board. Our first stop was an outlet mall full of fancy stores like Prada etc at discount prices. So not my thing since I love my op shop clothes, I did buy some beautiful smelling vanilla lip balm though.

We then had another four hours driving to Rome. When we arrived we did a quick bus drive around to see some of the sights before being dropped in the city for dinner. The traffic is absolutely nuts here, there are no lanes and people just cut each other off. They also double and triple park illegally or park in the middle of the road. It is terrifying! As Rome is a “no tour” city tomorrow we have to explore on our own, so tonight our tour guide “unofficially” took us to some of the most beautiful monuments on a walking tour. We ate dinner opposite the colosseum, saw the pantheon and the trevi fountain. Plus a few other monuments. After so long on a bus and two hours walking we were all knackered, our hotel is 30mins out of the city so by the time we got out here it was after 9pm and I think everyone has gone to bed.

Tomorrow we are catching the train in very early (eeeek) and going on a Vatican tour. Then we are going to see inside the colosseum, explore the city, find our own dinner and catch the train home.

We also get to do laundry tomorrow at the hotel! Hooray, no more poxy sink washing 🙂
