Vietnam one bag packing reflections / notes

PURCHASE IN COUNTRY

⁃ sunscreen ( circle k or tourist shop) ahhh this was way harder than we thought it would be! Once we got to the beach it was everywhere but before that we had to go to multiple pharmacies. And we really needed it as the UV index was bonkers

⁃ Bug spray (remos brand) – didn’t buy any as the clothing spray beforehand + the wipes did an excellent job

B PACKED:

⁃ paperwork (digital copies of everything but the visa would have been fine)

⁃ deodorant, toothpaste, avene 100ml sunscreen, cetaphil 100ml, boat patches, bug wipes

CARRY ON CONVERTIBLE ROLLER BAG

◦ 2 x Bella bodies travel bra (one padded) – probably only need one, or both but could have left out the merino bra

◦ 2 x ex officio travel undies – did not wear, not comfy. Really not impressed with these. There’s been a definite quality shift over time and B found the same thing with his men’s ones

◦ 1 x merino paire sleep singlet – excellent packing choice, only had to be washed out twice in 3.5 weeks

◦ 3 x modal black undies – replace ex officio with these, take 6 next time (2 per day)

◦ 1 x colourful skort – worn a few times and although a bit warm (polyester) this looked nice and would have been a great option in place of the dress

◦ 1 x macpac white linen shorts – worn multiple times, take a bit longer to dry but super cool and airy in the really hot places

◦ 1 x T9 crop 3/4 pants (blue) both pairs used as the second was worn on the plane but I think one would have been sufficient as they were quick dry

◦ 1 x M ripskirt dress short (flowers) – minimal use but this was a very active trip so pants / shorts were the go. Wore as a beach cover up a few times

◦ 2 x 3/4 sleeve cotton loose weave tops (teal, pink) – lots of use, so glad I shoved these in last minute as they were my saviour!

◦ 3 x isocool tee shirts (lilac, white, bright pink) only needed 2 at the most as not great in high humidity. I think in a warmer, dry climate these would be perfect but the humid meant they were itchy and heavy feeling

◦ Waterproof overlay Uniqlo- didn’t use at all, just got wet then dried off. Way too hot

◦ 2 x TS undershorts 5” – only need one pair to go with dress, the “we are underwear too” is definitely not accurate

◦ 1 x merino Sleep shorts – B ended up using these and was happy with them

◦ 1 x lined swim shorts black – cut liner out, lots of use in beach/pool parts but only for my own comfort, most women just wore a bikini / bathers

◦ 1 x swim/sunshirt: brown – no good in humidity, minimal use. Just too hot. Did get some use on boats in direct sun though

◦ 1 x monte Lou bikini set – lots of use, don’t say great but better than a one piece and not as heavy

◦ 1 x crocs thongs – lots of use, good purchase

OTHER STUFF

◦ MacBook and sleeve – thick padding worked well in wheeled Fairview bag. Still a pain at. Airports but manageable

◦ Mosquito wipes – excellent

◦ Small foldable backpack – very useful, absolute must bring for next trip!!

◦ Dry bag – used frequently for bathers

◦ Palexia, bacclofan Painkillers + dr letter- not checked but felt better having the letter

◦ Medications travel container: Panadol, nurofen, coloxyl, no-doz, dramamine, antibiotics, gastro stop, buscopan, nausea wafers, multiV, something for itch/bites, telfast 180

◦ Laundry bag – dry bag instead? Minimal use on a wash/wear long trip

◦ Toiletries (liquid) bag: shampoo 100ml, conditioner 100ml tub, body wash 100ml, cleanser tube 50ml, TOTD MU remover, 2x med cream, IT redness 20ml, heat spray 50ml, makeup spray 30ml, red correct tub, white concealer, face sunscreen – cc serum sunscreen better, remove makeup completely as it just slid off my face

◦ Toiletries (non liquid) bag: hairbrush, hair ties/scrunchies, toothbrush, gel ear plugs for snoring, concealer, powder, brush. Pimple patches, tweezers, wipes, floss – remove makeup

◦ Wet scarf or towel + ring – excellent purchase

◦ Usbc Hair straightener – not used at all, too hot so hair always tied up

◦ Mini clothesline + laundry sheets + sink cover – laundry line not used at all but sink cover and sheets good. Bring more sheets than days!!

◦ Crushable travel hat – best purchase, used every day

◦ BellRoy small cross body bag – used every day, small enough it didn’t hurt my shoulder, hat clip was also very useful to attach hat

PERSONAL ITEM (grey cross body handbag – swap to mini backpack for comfort)

◦ Ereader

◦ AirPods

◦ Pen

◦ Cheap folding Sunnies – broke on day 2. Had to buy in country

◦ Ear plugs (loop for plane)

◦ Money/travel wallet

◦ Merino wool socks for plane / cold feet – used on one flight so worth it

◦ Vapor water bottle – did not use at all, just used disposable ones

◦ Passport

◦ charger pack including cable, int adaptors and base, fitbit charger and air fly kit

WORE ON PLANE:

⁃ T9 crop 3/4 pants (grey)

⁃ bra (light blue merino racerback) good

⁃ merino lightweight shirt or cream modal – both good options, I wish I had taken both in place of an isocool shirt

⁃ 1 x Paire undies

⁃ keen Travel sandals – awesome purchase in place of taking sneakers. Very happy

⁃ Travel merino cardigan (pink) – good, used on planes only but I did get cold

⁃ Fitbit inspire 2 – took in place of Apple Watch and was really pleased with 7 day battery, smaller fit and better waterproofing. Wasn’t great as a watch in direct sun but the alerts were mainly what I wanted and then all worked fine for texts, calls and a vibrate alarm

EXTRA PURCHASES

– I bought a Uniqlo dress over there as it isn’t available in Aus. I wore that in place of the floral travel one to a fancy dinner

– had to buy sunnies as mine broke

– bought two more light weave cotton tank tops as well, wore at the beach and lounging around at the pool

– also squeezed in some souvenirs! Wood art, silk pairing and Vietnamese coffee with a coffee server for B

Two months until Europe!

Woohoo, exactly two months until we leave for Europe!
Exciting things that have been happening in the lead up…hmmm…well, we solved our backpack versus suitcase issue by buying a backpack and suitcase combined. A backcase? A suitpack? Anyway, we bought two of these cool Osprey 80L “Sojourn” bags. We also both have small daypacks for carry on and day to day adventuring.

Suitcase + backpack = something something

I am going to cover mine in purple tags so it is easy to tell which is which. B’s can just stay plain and boring, exactly the way he likes it 🙂

Another exciting thing that happened was our house purchase, which was settled in June. Because everyone knows it’s a great idea to buy a house and go on a big overseas trip in the same 6 month period – right? RIGHT? We are currently in the process of arranging house sitters for while we are away and that’s working out pretty well, it will be nice to have the house lived in here in Canberra while we are overseas.

Our house is a very nice house

So what are the big things left to do before we leave?

  • Sort out CommBank travel money cards. Oh and money. Need some of that too I suppose
  • Wait for intrepid travel to send through our tour documents for the 15 day tour we have arranged through Spain, France and Italy
  • Do some test run attempts at packing (I’m testing out travel clothes at the moment to try and decide what to take, argh so many clothes so little space)

B has also been learning Spanish, for his own interest mostly…but it will still come in handy in Spain!

Spanish lessons!

He’s actually learning it properly in a class whereas my focus in relation to languages has just been to learn how to say “I don’t speak English” in various languages to ward off the street sellers who hassle tourists.

Mel the llama says: No hablo inglés!

People keep asking what are highlights that I’m really looking forward to? Hmmm that’s a toughie, I am pretty excited to be spending my 30th birthday on a river cruise through Paris followed by a show at the Moulin Rouge! Then again, Pompeii will also be amazing. Oh, and Cinque Terre….that’s going to be a real highlight!

Cinque Terre – ah so pretty!

Two months and counting!

Mel xx

Tattoos, term ends and total packing fail!

Soooooo I haven’t packed yet. We leave in 5 days! I have a bunch of random stuff stacked haphazardly next to my suitcase with the intention that, eventually, it will go in my suitcase. That’s as far as I have gotten.

There are two things causing me to not be packed and ready yet…one is the fact that I am still wearing half my clothes…the other is my packing experience.

Every domestic trip I’ve been on (and there has been a lot!) I have been fully packed a few days before and then on the day I leave I ALWAYS have a massive attack of “oh my gosh I forgot something” so everything gets pulled out again. This time I’m removing that step and I’ll just pack the day I leave.

This is the excuse I am using. I’m sticking with it!

Don’t even ask about the tattoo part of this post….

Holiday preparation with two weeks to go

Things I have bought or borrowed or found in my closet or pinched out of other peoples closets so far to take on my trip:

  • coded padlock
  • mini clothesline
  • a roaming sim (thanks Zeus for this and the two things above! You’re the besterest buddy EVER)
  • comm bank travel card plus back up loaded with £ and €
  • neck pillow for bus and plane trips – thanks Jess!!
  • headphones for iPod
  • iPhone
  • e-reader (can only use on the plane as I’ll vomit on the bus if I try)
  • travel adapter for Europe and the UK
  • suitcase that meets contiki size rules
  • a back pack or day pack for the bus
  • a cheap “over the shoulder” handbag for adventuring during the day – big enough for wallet, camera and a small water bottle
  • a bunch of leggings and tights as these are going to be my default clothing item
  • a warm, waterproof jacket with a hood to keep me warm on the planes and the places we go that are a bit chilly
  • a light jacket/cardigan for the slightly warmer places or evenings out
  • one pair of jeans
  • quick dry undies from Kathmandu – best invention EVER
  • some long and comfy shirts to wear over leggings
  • two dresses to wear out partying
  • a pair of 3/4 Capri pants
  • comfy walking shoes
  • boots for wearing out and wearing in the colder places. I need my boots, I will feel naked without them!
  • a pair of pretty red shoes (flats) for nights out
  • a pair of thongs to bludge around in
  • socks and bras
  • basic girly toiletries including the amazing goo-tubes, very glad I don’t wear make up
  • mini first aid kit with sewing stuff, dettol cream, bandaids, sunscreen, insect repellent, Panadol etc
  • a small towel which I don’t need but having purple hair means I tend to turn lovely, white hotel towels a permanent shade of brightness 🙂
  • Things I have on my “pretend I am super organised list” that I still need to buy or sort out:

  • a spare camera memory card
  • a journal to write things down by hand (gotta have a hard copy as well as a blog!)
  • motion sickness bracelets and motion sickness meds – I hate the meds so am going to try the bracelets as well
  • an extra padlock for my day bag when I leave it on the bus
  • some £ and € in cash for when we first arrive
  • copies and printouts of all documentation including passport, itinerary, UK hotel confirmation and contact details for our UK relatives
  • Two weeks and one day to go!

I have been posting on the contiki “shout” app and chatting to people who will be on my tour. Have to say it is an awesome app. Already I have had some fears alleviated – mainly that I won’t be the only one NOT whitewater rafting!

    Roaming sim rates. Very reasonable!
