Japan 2020 Day 1+2: travelling to Osaka

At 8am in the morning we dropped Bear and Jet off at their dog hotel (after I interrogated them about their very detailed smoke and bush fire management plans). They love staying at Hanrob and I love that they let them hoard together and manage Jet’s anxiety really well – it’s win win.

At the last minute we changed our 3hr bus Canberra to Sydney ticket to a 5pm flight – the road was open and closing intermittently because of the bushfires in NSW at the moment and there was no guarantee we would get through on time. I was already nervous about connecting to our AirAsia flight as it was! Yay for the flat beds again though. We elected to fly Syd-KL, 11 hr stop over, KL – Osaka over a direct Sydney to Japan flight because the cost for the flat beds was the same as it was to fly economy on qantas. We both felt the flatbeds were worth it.

We did experience a slight flight delay from Canberra due to the weather and bushfire smoke but we still made it to Sydney just in time for our international flight connection to Kuala Lumpur. After 8hrs of veeeeery turbulent flying and landing in KL at 3am, we spent the next 8 hrs at the samasama airport hotel which is awesome because it is in KLIA2 (the Airasia terminal) so there is no need to collect bags or clear immigration. The room cost about $110 AUD for the 8 hours and I prebooked online which got me a discount.

We had a lovely sleep in our queen bed and then some food in the attached lounge before boarding the next 8hr flight on to Osaka, Japan. The flights really aren’t that bad when you have comfy flat beds, USB ports, free entertainment devices and a quilted blanket. I still maintain I would rather deal with an 11hr stop over than for 16hrs straight in economy on qantas for the same price! B is less convinced haha.

We arrived at Kansai airport in Osaka at 10pm at night local time after a very long day and a half of travelling. We used our icoca cards which are still valid from 6 years ago and caught a train from the airport into the city (easy), swapped to the subway (also pretty easy to do) and then walked about 6 mins to our lovely little apartment here.

In total it took about an hour and cost us Β₯1600 each versus what would have been Β₯20000 in a taxi. Taxis in Japan are very expensive so we didn’t even consider that option.

I booked the accomodation in Osaka on booking.com and it is called “Osaka Umeda Hotel Apartments” which basically means it’s a dude renting out his apartment like on Air BnB. Considering the prices of surrounding hotels though, this was excellent value for about $100 AUD a night! His directions provided by email were very detailed and it has wifi which is not always a given in Japanese hotels so I’m happy. His detailed directions combined with google maps got us there with a 5 min walk from the local Umeda station which is a big transport hub.

Our plan for tomorrow is to recover from 30 hours of travelling with a sleep in and then do some low stakes wandering of Osaka since neither of us have been here before.

Day 19: Ueno Zoo and the best food I’ve ever eaten

I SAW A POLAR BEAR!! And giant pandas.

We got up and headed to Ueno Zoo yesterday. Weather was a bit nicer (not face freezing anyway) and it was a few stops up the metro line. The animals were pretty cute, I was pretty excited about the pandas, polar bear and seals while B made friends with a slow loris and also thought the seals were cute, especially the baby ones.

20140117-082807.jpg

After a morning at the zoo we went to Ginza where there is a 4 level sony store. B enjoyed geek heaven while my new fluffy friend (from the zoo) and I sat in the pub on level 1 of the shop.

20140117-082913.jpg

After a rest, we were back out searching for this amazing 511 restaurant B has been raving about the entire trip, apparently famous for it’s Kobe beef. It’s down some middle of nowhere alley….difficult to spot….but man once you get inside it is amazing!

20140117-083028.jpg

20140117-083041.jpg

They offer ladies a fluffy blanket to put on your lap or over your shoulders if the aircon is to cold (I thought that was pretty awesome) and I ordered a 6 course meal while B had a 9 course Japanese themed one (lots of fish mixed in which was why I skipped it). We also let the sommelier choose the one which was….the best red I have ever had in my life. Actually, it was the best overall dining experience ever!

As well as a free glass of wine at the start, they gave us a present! A free ramen noodle kit πŸ™‚ I was very impressed.

20140117-083457.jpg

Well, that was last night and today is fly home day 😦 we have a few hours of exploring left with no idea what to do then it is off to Tokyo station for the narita airport express train and a 7pm flight back to Sydney, then connecting through to canberra tomorrow. I come home to perth the following day after leaving all my ski stuff in the land of ice and snow (which is apparently in the midst of a heat wave right now….yay).

Time to wake B up and pack the suitcase *waaaah*

Day 18: Disneyland post 2 and Tokyo Tower

Photos (most of them anyway) from Disneyland are in the previous post πŸ™‚

So today we got up early ish at 8am and after a bakery breakfast (B’s favourite kind lol) we headed off to DISNEYLAND! There was a brief discussion of whether we wanted to commit to it because the maximum temp today was meant to be 4C and it was also meant to snow but B was keen and I was…uhhh a little excited….so we went! It was insanely cold. Colder than the snow. I think it’s because in the snow you have all your gear on but walking around in this you have jackets and gloves etc but it’s not the same. The biting cold still gets you.

Our train station is a block away and is on the Disney line so it was an easy 15min trip. When we got there we started walking and then saw the lines. I know they weren’t that bad but they felt like it to us! We were there 20mins before opening and it was already like this:

20140115-205419.jpg

We decided our plan of action was get in, go for space mountain and then work it out from there. Tracey, Kiera and many others had warned us wait times for some rides could be over THREE HOURS, even in winter. When we got to space mountain the wait was 3 mins. Seriously! It was a bit of a let down though. Pirates of the Caribbean was much better (9 min wait) and we also went on splash mountain, star tours and big thunder mountain. We didn’t wait any longer than 10mins but by the last three we had started using their fast pass system which I can’t recommend enough. Basically you go up, get a ticket to ride for an hours time and then go do something else. When that hour is up you can not only get another fast pass for another ride BUT ALSO QUEUE JUMP YOUR CHOSEN RIDE! We got this down pat by the end of the day haha. We also watched the famous parade and I took lots of photos.

By 4pm we were knackered and after some present buying we headed back to the hotel. Unfortunately there were no personalised ears available but I bought Lana a bunch of presents and also got Katie, Braith and my nephew Hunter adorable kiddie ears! See pics of me modelling the adult versions haha:

20140115-205949.jpg

20140115-205954.jpg

I bought myself an adorable fluffy eeyore, he was the only one in the shop.

20140115-210114.jpg

After a half hour rest we headed off to the Tokyo Sky Tree. Originally the plan had been to go to Tokyo Tower but a lot of reading said the sky tree was much more spectacular….but lines could be up to five hours long! We banked on the freezing cold, kids returning to school and middle of the week meaning it wouldn’t be that bad. Good call by us! No lines and no wait. The view and the building are amazing. It is over 450m tall….

20140115-210306.jpg

We went up to the 350m point and did the full 360 degree walk. It was breathtaking, so glad we did it at night.

20140115-210427.jpg

Afterwards we had delicious chocolate treats and looked at all the beautiful lit up trees πŸ™‚

20140115-210509.jpg

20140115-210519.jpg

Tomorrow we are off to the zoo WHERE I WILL GET TO SEE POLAR BEARS!

In case you’re wondering, we only went to Disney land and not Disney sea today for two reasons. Firstly by 4pm we were shattered. Disney sea is open until 8pm but it was so cold and we were so tired by then we just didn’t have it in us. Secondly, having watched the documentary The Cove I had been feeling a little uncomfortable about going there….if you’re not sure what I mean, watch the doco. I am much happier with our decision to go to Ueno Zoo tomorrow instead.

Day 18: Disneyland post one (photos!)

I’ll post more stuff later but here are some photos from Disneyland today. We had a max temp of 3.8C and it was so cold it almost snowed….it’s the coldest I’ve ever been, that includes being out on the snow! However it meant the crowds were relatively small and instead of a 3hr wait our longest ride wait time was 9mins πŸ˜€ more talky to come later, for now, photos!

Day 17: Kyoto to Tokyo (short post)

Yaaaaaawn. Travelling is a bit exhausting. Or I am an old lady at heart. Maybe both :p

Today we planned to sleep in but were both awake by 7:30am. We checked out of the hotel, left our luggage and went off to explore Kyoto Imperial Palace and Ginkajuji Temple. Turns out you need a permit to go into the palace annnnnd we certainly didn’t have that. So off to the temple we went, it is known as the silver pavilion but is nowhere as flash as the golden pavilion from the other day. The gardens were beautiful though and the view of Kyoto from above the gardens was also pretty impressive.

20140114-201847.jpg

20140114-201854.jpg

20140114-201906.jpg

Then it was luggage collection and bullet train time! 2hrs 16mins to Tokyo which i read through and B napped/listened to music for. We are only one station away from Tokyo Station (at Hachibori) so although it was a long trek from one part of Tokyo station to another (970m!) the actual train transfer was easy.

When we finally got here and could drop all our bags it was nice to see they had folded pretty paper cranes on our robes πŸ™‚

20140114-202055.jpg

20140114-202101.jpg

We were going to go to Tokyo tower tonight but we are both tired and a bit grumpy from travelling. Especially me, I hate the train stations and how crowded they are. When you have a suitcase people get really narky at you as well – interesting comparison to the UK where at nearly every station people would help or at least look sympathetic when I was faced with huge flights of stairs.

Disneyland in the morning maybe? Max temp here tomorrow is 5C so I’ll let B decide if he’s up for it lol. If not, we can maybe go to the zoo or I’ll go see Mickey on my own! Gotta get them Mickey Mouse ears for Lana and Hunter….

Day 16: Hiroshima

Today was a brilliant day.

This morning we got up with the sun at 6:30am because we had tickets for the 8:30am Shinkansen (bullet train) to Hiroshima. Breakfast consisted of weird things we picked from a bakery at Kyoto station – mine was like an omelette in a croissant and a delicious chocolate bun, B had something similar but his chocolate thing had custard in the middle. He loves the bakeries.

We caught the Nozomi super express out of Kyoto which only has 4 stops on the way to Hiroshima and takes 96 minutes. Tickets each way are about $100 but that includes a reserved seat (in a no smoking carriage….phew) and it is on the fastest train which goes MORE THAN 300km per hour! I think $100 is pretty reasonable to travel over 400km in distance within 1.5hrs.

20140114-143204.jpg
The biggest issue on the trains (and in the train stations) for me is the prevalence of squat toilets. I hate them. I have the double whammy of no balance and always being in leggings/boots which make it super awake are to use the damn things! I’ve taken to using the disabled toilets in the stations….I always check if someone else is waiting first and I’m always super quick but I feel a little guilty. Considering that the “western” toilets here have heated seats and bidets I’ve been really surprised at the fact so many places we go have only squat toilets. Sometimes there will be a mix (15 squat toilets, one Western) and the Japanese ladies always laugh at me when I let them go in front because I’m waiting for the western toilet. Pretty sure the squat toilet is a cultural experience I’ll continue to avoid wherever possible.

Anyway, enough ranting about Japanese public toilets….back to my amazing day.

We got into Hiroshima at 10:06am and hopped on a tram to go to the Genbaku Dome-mae, also known as the atomic bomb dome.

20140114-143252.jpg

20140114-143308.jpg

20140114-143316.jpg
From here we walked down to the river and decided to catch a private ferry out to Miyajima which is one of Japan’s three most scenic spots. I was pretty impressed B volunteered for the boat ride since he gets pukey on boats but he did fine πŸ™‚ it was calm most of the way anyway. On the way to the boat, some Japanese uni students used signs in English to ask if we would participate in a comparative study – how many soybeans can a person not raised with chopstick use move from one plate to another in 2mins? We both said yes (what a laugh, plus you know, we are both slightly competitive) but then B had to say no as they had to film it, I still did it though! I thought it was a bit unfair as the chopsticks were plastic and those little beans were slippery suckers but I managed to move 4 and the Japanese guy I competed against only got 11. I thought I represented chopstick newbies relatively well!

20140114-143412.jpg

20140114-143420.jpg
Miyajima is an island famous for the Itsukushima shrine, set out in the water. You can see it in the photos here – the big red/orange gate thing. As it was low tide we got some pretty awesome shots.

20140114-143508.jpg

20140114-143519.jpg

20140114-143533.jpg
Then I decided we were going to climb up to the rope way and go on the cable cars right to the top of the island (the peak we were aiming for was mount misen). So. Many. Stairs. It was worth it though, I can see how they get their world heritage site listing and the tag of “one of three most scenic views in Japan”.

20140114-143645.jpg

20140114-143653.jpg

20140114-143703.jpg

20140114-143713.jpg
After the trip back down in the cable cars, and down all the damn steps, we went back to the ferry terminal and came back to the dome site (which took about 45mins on the boat) where we spent the rest of the day exploring the Peace Memorial Park area and the memorial museum. It was a very moving experience for me as someone who has taught history to high school students before.

It’s now 6:20pm and we just hopped back on the Nozomi train to head back into Kyoto. I have my e-reader and B has his very awesome noise cancelling headphones that I’m jealous of because the speed of the train makes my ears ring and pop. We also both just ate our entire body weight in pastry (never leave a boy with a weakness for bakery food alone in a bakery…) so I think by the time we get in, it will be bed time. A sleep in tomorrow then off to Tokyo for our last few days.

Note: I’m deliberately not thinking about lugging all my luggage on multiple trains into Tokyo. Waaaaah. DENIAL DENIAL DENIAL.

20140114-143759.jpg

Also – I have a bruise from where a deer bit me hahaha

Day 15: Nara and the Gion district

Today we got up relatively early (8am) and headed off to Nara for the day. I have found a cafe down the road with wifi (hence the posting of two blog posts this morning) so will post this one the next time we wander past!

We caught the Kintetsu line out to Nara, it’s a private train line and not part of the amazing JR network here, we use it because for a few AUD more it became a 34min trip instead of a 70min trip. We also didn’t buy the infamous JR passes before leaving Australia because although they are fantastic for people travelling only on JR, we aren’t doing that. We are alternating from planes to buses to a subway and on to a few JR trains….so we made the decision to buy an ICOCA card which has suited us well.

Anyway, back to Nara! Nara is famous for “deer park” where take deer come up and let you feed them. I was determined to find the park. It wasn’t hard as the deer literally appear on the footpath for cuddles and food! I had a great time…right up until I was trying to feed the baby deer and one of the bigger ones got annoyed and bit my butt! Four times! B ended up being me deer bodyguard after that.

20140113-081220.jpg

20140113-081233.jpg
We walked through deer park, stopping to pat deer and laugh at small children crying hysterically, and then up to Todai-ji Temple which is famous for one of the largest wooden structures in the world – a 50 foot Buddha statue. He was one giant Buddha.

20140113-081326.jpg

20140113-081340.jpg

20140113-081353.jpg
After this we headed back to the train station, ate pancakes and then caught the train back into Kyoto again. A bit more adventuring on the subway lines brought us out near the Gion District which is famous for real life Geisha (called Geicko in Kyoto, or Maiko if they are in training) as well as traditional wooden buildings. We saw quite a few Geiko and Maiko, lots of old wooden buildings and ate a delicious sweet bun full of beef and veggies from a street cart.

20140113-081503.jpg
At 5pm I was in need of a serious nap before dinner! However I soldiered on and we found a really tasty, quick restaurant across the road. B had to navigate the ticket system for me (buy your meal, get a ticket, take to counter) but we did pretty well…mmm pork.

Tomorrow we are off to Hiroshima which should be amazing, although 1.5rs each way on the train will be meh. Very early day tomorrow with the alarm set for 6:30am.

Day 14: Kyoto

Again – I am writing this on day 14 and will post when I find wifi. Rah to hotel MyStays lame no internet. So today started a bit later than planned (we slept until 8:30am) but I had a list of places I wanted to explore and I was pretty determined. Poor B. We started with breakfast at a 7/11 because lots of cafΓ©s are closed on Saturdays, especially in the direction we were heading. It was here I discovered the Japanese like Mountain Dew flavoured chips? Ew. Didn’t have any. Rookie mistake on breakfast. Not only was it gross but the pigeons tried to steal it all.

20140112-090701.jpg

20140112-090710.jpg

20140112-090721.jpg

We walked up to Nijo Castle which was about 1km from our hotel. It is kind of like Canberra winter here – clear but very cold so the walk was reasonably pleasant. Nijo castle was beautiful and among other things, we saw a falconry show! And watched three old Japanese men get in a “disagreement” because one hit the other with his camera lens hehehe and they say Australians are bad!

20140112-090805.jpg

20140112-090841.jpg

20140112-090858.jpg

20140112-090911.jpg

We spent about 1.5hrs wandering around Nijo Castle altogether looking at all the gardens, walking through the palace and reading some of the history. It’s about 500yrs old so has a lot of history. We both got a nifty coin minted in the gift shop which I have put a picture of here and I also got postcards to add to my “around the world postcard collection board thing”. That’s what I’m calling it. I also got a souvenir ticket when went in, I have a collection of those from my last trip so I got a little excited.

20140112-091003.jpg

20140112-091018.jpg
From Nijo Castle we walked up and across to the Kyoto imperial castle and gardens. The castle was unfortunately closed 😦 so we will have to try and go back again another day. Behind the gardens we found the Shokokuji Temple which was not as visually amazing as the next temple I’m going to tell you about but was far more peaceful and well…zen. We walked around here for awhile but decided not to go in to the actual temple itself as people were actively using it to pray (or whatever it is they use them for) and we didn’t want to disturb anyone by being bumbling tourists.

20140112-091131.jpg

20140112-091141.jpg

20140112-091153.jpg

20140112-091201.jpg
At this point it was 2:30pm and walking was getting pretty tiring. So I navigated the bus timetables and maps (I am taking full credit for this, B just helped me work out how to pay. Amelia you would be SO PROUD OF ME!) and we headed to the west side of Kyoto to see the very famous Kinkakuji Temple, also known as the golden pavilion. As soon as we saw it we realised why. It’s visually very impressive. I was so glad we got here at the time we did as the sun was reflecting on to it and it was just beautiful. I took heaps of photos (when I could, the crowds were pretty full on) and I really enjoyed it. I bought you a little present here Monica! Hehe. I had intended to walk 10mins down the hill to a zen garden but as we walked out the number 12 local bus that went all the way to our hotel was just pulling up and it was too tempting not to get on and head back.

20140112-091252.jpg

20140112-091303.jpg

20140112-091313.jpg

20140112-091328.jpg
After a brief rest, we caught the subway into Kyoto and bought our tickets out to Nara tomorrow. We are taking the express private train and it was about 1100Β₯ each which is $12 so I was happy with that, we can also reserve our seats on this one which means we can select a no smoking train carriage. The prevalence of cigarettes here is almost as bad, if not worse, than Eastern Europe. Ick.

After sorting that out, we went to a recommended restaurant (Tachibana) nearby that does a Japanese savoury pancake known as okonomiyaki and IT IS SO NOMMY I COULD EAT IT FOREVER. They spoke very little English and had no English menu so we had to use “iie seafoodu” again for me and just see what we could get – pork! Yum. At the end I very enthusiastically declared the meal was “oishe” and the chef was very chuffed.

20140112-091419.jpg

20140112-091424.jpg

20140112-091432.jpg

Tomorrow we are off to Nara. B is very enthusiastic to see some deer and I want to see the 50ft Buddha statue. After Nara I’m hoping to head in to the Gion district and see some genuine Geisha as well.

Day 13: travelling to Kyoto

I’m writing this on day 13 but will publish the entry when we find some wifi internet πŸ™‚

Today was an early start. Up at 7am and picked up at 8:40am to meet the shuttle bus that was to drive us all the way into the airport. It’s about a 2.5hr drive from Niseko and it’s a bit of a horror – partly because of the terrifying mountain descent and partly because of the fact we both get motion sickness. B spent the trip trying to pretend he wasn’t on a bus and I spent it taking photos of ridiculous road signs. WHY IS THERE A SHARK ON A ROAD SIGN JAPAN?! Are you warning of a shark avalanche? A sharkalanche? Also the deer you have to watch out for on the road are clearly fabulous. You’ll see what I mean from the sign.

The flight down to kansai was uneventful then it was a 75min train trip from Osaka to Kyoto. We bought little train/subway ticket things to use (ICOCA) which are kind of like smart riders. B got me a hello kitty one hahaha I’m a bit in love with it. His has dragons or some boring boy stuff. Oh I’ve just been corrected – apparently they are (really ugly) wind and thunder gods. The lights as we went past on the train and the amount of people and the whole transit system are pretty amazing stuff for someone from Perth! Apparently I’ll completely loop out when we get to Tokyo.

Our hotel here is quite nice. Smaller than the other room but all the same amenities except for the lack of wifi. I’m a bit grumpy about that….

We found a little “fast food” shop that is basically next door and the meal cost me Β₯525 which is about $6. It was delicious! Teriyaki chicken, green veggies and tofu and sautΓ©ed root veggies as well.

Up and about early (maybe) to explore Kyoto tomorrow πŸ™‚

P.S. I have just realised I can’t post photos in the blog post when I’m doing a draft – they will all just get lumped at the end. Hmmmm I will have to find a way around this for the next post but for now…I’ve already typed it so….sorry! Today’s photos include: Percy in the snow, ridiculous road signs, a terrifying mountain drive, Kyoto/Osaka photos by train and cheap food omnomnom.

Day 12: last snow day!

Awwww tomorrow we leave for Kyoto so today was our last day in the snow. I think we might be back next year though….we have barely explored 1/3 of the mountain here in niseko!

Today we frolicked merrily in the snow. I attempted to push B into a snow bank/start a snow ball fight a grand total of twice and both times ended up with a face full of snow. We were attempting panorama shots with my iPhone but my hands shake and even getting him to do it failed because it was so cold.

We returned all my ski gear today and then settled our account here at freedom inn. Feels like my first actual large expense…because they just bill your room for the lift tickets which is super convenient. Until you have to pay the bill of course. Then you feel a little poor.

We are both stuffed full from tonight’s dinner which was an amazing, traditional sumo wrestler hot pot. The restaurant staff spoke very little English but my “iie seafoodu” and “oishedesu niku” seemed to help (no seafood and delicious meat). The serving size even between two was enormous. Pretty sure we ate an entire pig AND at least three cabbages. Not to mention noodles lol. So much better than last nights crappy pizza. I also got a training lesson on how to use chopsticks since I still can’t get it quite correct…my argument is if the food can make it to my mouth, I’m doing okay!

Tomorrow we are up bright and early for a 2-3hr bus trip to new chitose airport, then a 2hr plane trip to Osaka and then a 70min train trip into Kyoto. Blah. Not sure how good the internet will be at the new hotel so if there are no blog posts don’t panic please people watching at home! I will write them and add them as I find interwebz.

I will miss the snow. Not only is it beautiful, but it is a lot harder in other places to find reasons to try on hats like this and make B super sad while I get super happy πŸ˜€

P.S. The first one is a red panda the second is a penguin. Not a penis. B says it looks like a penis hat. CLEARLY IT IS A PENGUIN HAT!
