Rottnest Island!

Peak period on Wadjemup (Rottnest island) is Dec – Feb so we initially had no chance at accomodation…but by going on a Thursday night, the day after school started I snagged a unit for 1 night at Geordie Bay.

We caught the 8am Rottnest express ferry from Northport (the best departure point if you have a car) and also added our own bikes on for $20 each. I wore a scopolamine patch and had no nausea at all

The trip is 30 mins direct but took a bit longer for us as we went via the B sheds for another pick up. It all works very smoothly with BYO bike and they load/unload it for you. As my bike is an ebike the battery mist be removable and carried as hand luggage…and the bike mist weigh under 22kgs.

When we arrived we started off on our 26km ride around the entire island. We saw some beautiful beaches.

We also saw one of the NZ fur seals waving at everyone in the water! After a brief lunch break we rode back to the settlement and collected our unit keys. We stayed at Geordie Bay with a beautiful ocean view.

For dinner we walked 1.5kms from Geordie Bay to Pinky’s. The food was very underwhelming (especially for the bonkers pricing) but there were lots of quokkas around…even baby ones.

We walked back and watched the sunset from our balcony with some cheese and snacks from the IGA near our unit.

Checkout is 9am on the island so we were up fairly early. We returned the keys then rode up to the Oliver Hill Gunnery.

We declined the paid tour and instead decided to go back down the hill for a swim at The Basin. Just as we were about to get in the chopper started hovering over and the shark siren went off…apparently there was a 3.5m Tiger shark just offshore. After awhile we were allowed in again. I stayed close to sure because it got very deep, very fast. It was quite rough in the water…I do miss the calm ocean bays in Thailand.

We saw soooo many cute quokkas! It was Joey season as well…babies!

Having not been to Rottnest for a long time (25+ years) I think staying overnight was worth it. No rush back to the ferry and it meant we were there for dusk when lots of quokkas come out to play. One night would definitely be sufficient if you make sure your days are longer on either side.

Annual Hamelin Bay trip Days 1-3! Xmas 2024/25

Day 1-3 was the no kids part of our third annual trip! Stingrays, beach, books, movies, sunsets and relaxation. We are staying in Ocean Cabin 2 (Lov Spring) this time.

We visited Glenarty Wines on Day 2 which is about 13kms from Hamelin Bay Holiday Park. They follow a farm to table approach with 80% of what they serve coming from their own property. We were lucky enough to come on a quiet day which meant even without a booking we were able to choose the five course set menu with wine pairings. It was all good but the highlights were definitely the lamb and the frozen meringue dessert. We also bought a bottle of Fume Blanc as it was delicious!

I also read real books (versus ebooks) for the first time in years….mostly because these are only published in Canada so the only way to get the series was physical copies from Canadian Amazon.

On day 3 we drove up to Gnarabup Beach and had breakfast at the White Elephant Cafe. Last time we tried this was peak holiday season and cars were parked for kilometres up the road…this time was less busy. The cafe was very average and unable to cope with the number of people so prepare for slow service. From there we headed to Ellens Brook Homestead and the alleged Meekadarribee Falls waterfall at the end of a 1.3km return walk. The walk was lovely but the waterfall doesn’t exist in summer.

We had much better luck with the unofficial Kevill Road Waterfall. We followed Google maps roadside pin for this one and they have put in some gravel roadside car parking so people can safely pull over.

We then dropped into Gabriel’s Chocolates at their new location which is much closer to Margaret River town (yay) and included an adorable kelpie puppy who needed all the pats.

Another lovely Hamelin Bay sunset (in the biting cold wind!).

Crown Towers Perth 3 night staycation

Since we are both working and can’t have more than a few days off, we decided to take a little staycation to Crown Towers in Perth this week. Advantages were:

– staying Sunday to Wednesday means basically half price room rates

– it was much quieter than a weekend

– it was easier to get into places, get food or drink service and to move around to different parts of the hotel

We checked in on Sunday and decided to enjoy the adults only section of the pool area. There are two parts here, one is free and one has an additional cost. Given this was our only day of nice weather (31C! At the end of April!) we decided to pay for the private section and ended up being the only people there.

After paddling around and drinking pina coladas in our private infinity pool for 4 hrs, we headed back inside to watch the sunset from our room.

Then it was off to find some food (junction grill inside the casino) and drink some more cocktails to finish the day.

On day 2, we slept in then enjoyed the birdcage high tea at TWR. We couldn’t finish the food! It was very good but very filling.

B had a nap while I enjoyed relaxing in the adults only spa in the pool area for the afternoon. We then had dinner at Fortune 88 in the casino before some cocktails and the only type of gambling I engage with…the money wheel!

Day 3 we had a relatively early breakfast at Epicurean (a little over rated in our opinion but maybe buffets are just not for us) before we went for a 2hr / 19km bike ride around the river on hired ebikes.

My butt was pretty sore after that! It’s been awhile since I cycled anywhere, so more spa time was needed. Dinner tonight was booked at Rockpool and we did the degustation 4 course paired wine menu. It was delicious. We also thoroughly enjoyed eavesdropping on the awkward date next to us 😂 the photos of the food were terrible due to low lighting but the taste was DELICIOUS!

Home time tomorrow.

Hamelin Bay Jan 2024 visit: Days 1-2 Ranger Redz Zoo and Cosy Corner Beach

This is our second year visiting Hamelin Bay over the new year period! Once we got the first booking in a 6 sleeper ocean cabin we have been able to adjust it for the year following and are hoping to adjust again for next year…. now that we are one of the in crowd with a repeated booking! The first year we got 2 nights mid January through the public ballot, this year we got 6 nights early January and next year I’m hoping to stay over new years.

We drove down on Day 1 via Ranger Redz Zoo in Pinjarra. I had bought the kiddos animal experiences for Christmas as they were moving house so didn’t need yet more crap to stockpile and we had booked the “treetastic tour” with sugar gliders, squirrel gliders and possums! The zoo were also very nice and let us sneak a 5th person in so B didn’t have to miss out like he usually does for stuff with the kids haha. The experiences was AWESOME and although the zoo is small it’s worth a visit. Note there is no food on site but the Pinjarra Bakery is only a 2 min drive away.

We arrived in Hamelin bay around 4pm and then proceeded to go on a scavenger hunt left by friends who had stayed in the same cabin 2 weeks before! The kids enjoyed finding the clues although did brute force the cypher…finding things is more exciting than solving them apparently.

We then visited the famous sting rays, watched a movie and had an early night after a long day.

Day 2 started with a sleep in and then a trip to Cosy Corner beach. The wind and climb down are a bit nuts here…poor me trying to climb back up an insanely steep sand dune! The beach scenery is spectacular though.

It was very windy with rough conditions not suitable for the kids to swim so we did some exploring and then headed back to the car. Last year we had lunch at Hamelin Bay Winery and it was very quiet so we thought to do the same this year…to discover they were completely booked out! We stopped for a drink instead and made a note to book next year before having lunch at the Karridale Tavern instead. Wifi was enjoyed by all.

The afternoon saw us head back to no wifi/phone reception at the cabin and attempt the first use of our cool cabana on the windy beach. Overall opinion: It lives up to the hype. Hamelin Bay is a very windy area and the cabana coped well and did not fly away….although it is definitely not a one person set up in wind. It also packed away easily.

Dinner was sausages and kebabs on the BBQ (with wine for adults) and some Cards Against Humanity family edition as well as taco, cat, goat, cheese, pizza. Both were winners but the youngest in our group was definitely a fan of all the butt references in CAH haha.

Yallingup getaway Day 3&4:

Day 3 was Bs actual birthday! Woohoo! We started with a lovely breakfast view from the accomodation.

It was time then for yet another birthday present for him – a surprise surfing lesson with Crystal Wallace (and her husband Tim) at Yallingup Surf School. I supervised from the beach haha. Unfortunately surfing triggered Bs motion sickness so it was a very short lesson followed by a long nap – the company were great though and I recommend them.

We had a 90 min couple massage at the Empire Spa Retreat in the afternoon. You have to book quite far ahead to get into their only couples room but they were fantastic – super accomodating for some unexpected injuries I had as well.

Bs birthday dinner was at Lamont’s at Smiths Beach with a (allegedly) a lovely beach view and some amazing food choices. I arranged a 6pm booking for sunset. Unfortunately while the restaurant is on the beach, it does not have a view once you are inside. Food was okay – not terrible, not amazing. The pavlova dessert was HUGE!

On day 4 we did a self checkout (which meant we got a delicious breakfast hamper pictured below!) and then drove 3hrs back to Perth. We would definitely stay at this accomodation again, we both really liked the bush/privacy vibes.

On the way home our halfway stop was at Myalup Miami Bakehouse to admire all the kangaroo art.

Yallingup getaway Day 1&2:

We are heading down to Yallingup (south west WA) for Bs 40th birthday. We left perth on Easter Sunday and drove just under 3hrs to Vasse Felix winery for lunch as our first stop. The 5 course degustation was delicious! Lovely venue with amazing food and wine in a beautiful location.

From Vasse Felix, we stopped in at the chocolate factory (I needed fruffles – freckled truffles) then drove 20 mins back up towards Yallingup to check into our “luxury private villa” at Empire Spa Retreat. The accomodation is surrounded by bush and there are only 11 guest rooms on the adults only premises.

We checked in around 4:30pm and enjoyed some champagne on the deck surrounded by the lovely sounds of the bush while the sun set.

Day 2 commenced with the included continental breakfast at Empire Spa Retreat before we were collected for our winery tour by Esquire Classic Charters. This is a small, family run business that delivers bespoke tours. I let them know we were keen for a variety of wineries, preferably small owner operated ones and to not visit ones we have been to before. Maureen came up with the itinerary below and I enjoyed patting all the winery doggos I could find! We will definitely use this company again.

  • Canal Rocks 10.10-10:25
  • Marri Wood Park 10.30 – 11.15
  • House of Cards Winery 11.20 – 12.00
  • Gabriel Chocolates 12.05 – 12.20
  • Woody Nook (lunch & tasting) 12.30 – 13.55
  • Fermoy Wines 14.00 – 14.50
  • Windance Wines 15.00 – 15.50
  • Cape Naturaliste Wines 16.00 – 16.50

Southwest WA Day 4: Pemberton

We started the day by driving 15 mins up the road from our accomodation to visit the Dave Evans Bicentennial Tree. This Karri tree is 75 m tall and was pegged for climbing to celebrate Australia’s bicentenary in 1988. You reach the top by climbing 165 metal spikes with a few platforms in between.

It became a tourist attraction after the original Gloucester Tree (a fire look out for many years with pegs for climbing which then became a tourist attraction) was damaged due to people walking over its shallow root system. You can still visit the Gloucester tree though, just no climbing. We had been planning a tree visit yesterday but it was 35C which is quite warm for the southwest region so instead we stayed around Augusta and did extra touristy things there. When we arrived today, it was only 20C which was perfect climbing weather but in the end, we took some nice photos and neither of us climbed it. Too high!

After leaving the tree, we drove to The Cascades and did the 1.2km walking trail. There were some steep inclines and descents so even though this is short, it was challenging in some parts.

After The Cascades, we drove to the Lavender and Berry Farm on the other side of Pemberton where B reckons he ate the best berry pancakes he’s ever had. The scone was also delicious!

From there, we drove to Big Brook Dam and then our to Mountford Winery & Tangletoe Cidery. Their tasting was really good with choices, paddles and little snacks to help you with the process. Plus a very well behaved cellar door dog who wanted all the pats.

We arrived back at our accomodation around 2:30pm and enjoyed a spa, some of the wine from Mountford and the view from our deck.

Home tomorrow! It’s a 4hr drive from here as we are heading back towards Karridale to collect the rest of our holiday group before heading up to Perth.

Southwest WA Day 3: Augusta and Pemberton Region

We checked out of the Hamelin Bay Beach Park today and headed 20 mins down the road to Augusta. We had booked a Leeuwin Lighthouse Tour (book ahead, they do sell out in peak periods) and all enjoyed learning about the history and climbing to the top. Well, some of us enjoyed climbing more than others…pretty sure the 9yo and I would have happily stayed at the bottom!

I had to get my photo taken at the well known sign showing where the two different oceans meet!

We then looked at some other local attractions including the Water Wheel, the local scenic tourist drive, Skippy Rock as well as having a (very delicious) lunch at the bakery.

Around lunchtime we dropped Jess and the kids to visit for a few days with her Dad and then headed to our accomodation at Silkwood Chalets near Pemberton. On the way, we stopped in at the Southern Forest Chocolate Factory which is small but impressive! We collected some chocolates before heading to our accomodation at Silkwood Chalets approx 15 mins outside of Pemberton town centre.

We are in the “Cabernet chalet” which is one of 5 chalets facing on to a beautiful lake with Karri trees towering over it. As we arrived, a family of baby ducks came to say hi and got very close!

After spending some time with our new duckling friends, we then relaxed (adults only accomodation means no children anywhere nearby haha) in the huge spa bath with a view before enjoying dinner on the deck.

Southwest WA Day 2: Hamelin Bay Beach

We started the day with a BBQ breakfast and then a wander along the boardwalk up to the lookout on the beach. We then sat on the beach while the youngest among us swam around pretending to be a whale for a happy 45 mins.

Lunch today was a 15 min drive away at Hamelin Bay Winery. The other adults were able to do wine tasting and the kids and I took advantage of having phone reception so I could check some emails and they could play Roblox/chat to their friends. The winery was gorgeous and we left with 4 bottles and lots of positive comments about the food.

After some early afternoon quiet time (and a replacement bath mat because holy crap do kids bring a lot of sand inside haha) we wandered back to the beach, this time with the esky and my beach tent ready for its first use. The beach tent was an epic fail but the kids had a great time making sand castles and swimming for hours and my niece (who is 12) basically asserted herself as the “stingray whisperer” and all the stingrays were following her up and down the beach. She named them all…. stingy, stingy junior, Ray-Ray, stingarette….and so on.

Dinner tonight was sausages (on the BBQ again) and the game of choice was “game of life” with B winning.

Southwest WA Day 1: Myalup, A’maze’n Margaret River and Hamelin Bay Beach Park

We headed off today for our first “family vacation” with my bestie and her two kids in tow. We all drove from Perth together in her 4WD.

We left Perth at 9:30am and stopped in at the Old Coast Road Brewery in Myalup as stop 1 after about 90mins of driving. This was a good stop for us as we did our food shopping the day before so didn’t need to go into any major tourist towns to get anything on the way and it gave the kids lots of space to run around if they wanted to. The brewery had some great beer options (including a few low % ones for drivers and stein sized takeaways) and we were lucky enough to organise our lunch stop to be at the same time as some friends of mine from Canberra who were coming the opposite way!

Stop 2 was at “Amaze’n Margaret River” which was another 90 mins away and has a hedge maze and mini golf on site. They also have a little cafe for those looking for a coffee spot and some scones. It was $26 per adult ($18 per child) to access the maze and that was without the mini golf. As we arrived around 3pm they did say we might struggle to get nigh activities done before closing at 5pm so we just did the maze. We found our way to the centre lookout quite easily but did have to use a little bit of google maps assistance to get out haha.

We then drove our final distance of 30 mins (with a short stop for fresh bread) to arrive at the Hamelin Bay Holiday Park where we had a 6 person ocean view cabin booked. Now, booking this was a pain in the butt! They open Dec/Jan bookings by phone on May 1st and I rang over 200 times (across 2.5hrs) before I finally got through and the only 2 nights were left in January one these dates. So we took what we could get. This cabin is fantastic though – right on the beach, sleeps 6 (1 queen bed, 2 single beds, 1 trundle bed, 1 rollaway bed) and is fully equipped including a Weber BBQ with gas bottle. There is no phone reception or wifi here which is sort of awesome and sort of a challenge. They also run off bore water which is good to know before you arrive as you need to bring your own drinking water.

As well as the amazing stingrays (see photos further down) we also saw plenty of very chonky kookaburras.

We walked on the beach, paddled with some friendly stingrays and watched the sunset before a few games of “hand to hand wombat” and bed.
