A running record of cabaret/circus shows

This is the ever-growing list of cabaret and adult circus shows B and I have seen together. What can I say? The man really likes his adult circus! He now claims he can’t go to the normal circus anymore because “it’s just not as good without boobs and stuff”.

Favourite shows so far include Star Wars for the absurdity and the humour, Yummy (which was a drag performance) for the AMAZING crowd atmosphere and the trapeze act at the end of Infamous. That was breathtaking and a must see if you get the chance!

Day 3+4: mini break at Tomakin Beach

The third day of beachy fun started at 6:30am when Bear decided he wanted to go to the beach and wasn’t taking no for an answer. We managed to put him off for a little while longer but…he was very persistent! Lots of face licks and leaping on the bed. So off we went for more sandy, wet fun.

After the beach, Bear needed a nap and we headed off into Mogo Village for lunch. We ate at Grumpy & Sweethearts cafe which was a really nice lunch stop with delicious toasted sandwiches. The outdoor eating section was full of plants and shade to avoid the midday sun.

There’s also some lovely little shops at Mogo, including a plant nursery, ice-creamery and Lolly shop.

After lunch it was family nap time and then back to the beach for Bear’s last visit before we head home. Poor Bear! Dinner on our last night was at the Tomakin Sports and Social Club which is walking distance from our accomodation and came recommended much higher than the only “official restaurant” in town – JJs at the Moorings – which we tried on our first night and were very disappointed with. Tomakin Sports and Social Club was good value, good food and very friendly and next time we will try them first.

B had initially said no morning dog swim on the day we left because he didn’t want 3hrs of wet dog in his car…but he’s such a softie (and Bear has perfected his “I’m adorable” face) so he let Bear have one last romp! We had Tomakin Beach to ourselves for most of the morning.

Then it was a 2.5hr drive back to Canberra with a short stop at the Braidwood Bakery for lunch….mmm chunky steak pies. Bear slept pretty much the whole way home because he was a tired puppy.

I officially call the first family beach holiday a success!

Day 2: mini-break at the coast and exploring the local area

The day started with more dog beach time. It’s about a 4 min walk from our pet friendly rental house down to the dog beach. Another few mins takes us to the people beach as well.

Bear’s highlights this morning were: making a new husky friend, romping through other people’s beach towels (naughty!) and walking out to the top of the cove with B.

We left a very tired Bear at home and went off to explore some of the surrounding area. Mogo Zoo was only a 5 min drive and was a nice visit, we got to feed animals and explore.

After a few hours of zoo fun, we drove into Batemans Bay (another 15mins) and ate fish and chips on the beach. The fish and chip place is the same one as in Canberra (Bernie’s) and is just as good.

Batehaven Beach was a beautiful spot to enjoy the food.

We arrived back to Tomakin Beach around 4pm to a doggy who definitely wanted to go back to the beach again….he’s been working hard at perfecting his “pleeeeeease” face! Who could say no to that?

Day 1: Mini-break on the south coast of NSW

This was our first ever trip to what is commonly referred to as “the coast” by Canberrans…much to most of our friends horror. We know a lot of people who spend every weekend in summer at or around Batemans Bay. It’s about a 2.5hr drive from Canberra and Bear had a very clear opinion on the length of the drive.

I booked pet friendly accomodation in Tomakin Beach based on a recommendation from a friend as you get the small town feel with the convenience of a 24 hr dog beach.

After the drive, we spent the first afternoon and evening at the dog beach. Bear’s first beach experience left him a very happy doggie:

He really loved playing chasey up and down with B as well as rolling in the sand then flinging himself at the waves.

A short visit to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

For some reason I’ve just discovered this didn’t post when it was meant to! Oh well, it’s published now.

We took a short holiday break to visit KL – a first time location for both of us. We were only here for a couple of days so see below for the highlights! As a plus, the aussie dollar has a good exchange rate here with $1 AUD buying about 3 Ringgits so most food and services were very reasonably priced. Tiger Beer was only $3-4 AUD a pint in most places which made B super happy! Food and drink outside of 5 star hotels is very reasonably priced.

One thing I wished we had done before landing was download the app GRAB, which is the rideshare app they use here. I had a horror experience with a jerk taxi driver who wouldn’t use the meter and grabbed my arm. I ended up using a chunk of my data to download the app on the spot. It’s well worth using as it is much more reasonably priced than taxis and removes the stress of when they try to haggle with you.

Highlight 1. Flying Air Asia (no joke)

I flew on Air Asia flat beds both ways and they were so awesome! Only a couple of hundred dollars more than economy and they made the 8 hr flight so much more bearable! I would absolutely do this again. The food and service is still the same but the seats, the entertainment devices and the blankets made it well worth the extra $$. In fact, we are doing this again on our next overseas trip!

Highlight 2. Hotel Capri by Fraser aka Mel’s first infinity pool experience!

Sooooooo pretty! Each room was like a little apartment with a TV, fridge, microwave, rainfall shower, desk etc. Then there was the amazing infinity pool and private spas on the roof! There was also a rooftop bar, included buffet breakfast and a shuttle into the city each day for just m $130 AUD a night.

Highlight 3. The epic thunder and lightning storms

Holy cow was I NOT prepared for these. Our first one was during the trip from the airport to the hotel and it was terrifyingly loud and raining so hard you couldn’t see out the windscreen! The second one was while staying on the 27th floor of the hotel! It was so loud it felt like it was overhead….glorious to watch on the balcony though. This article explains why Malaysia is one of the lightning strike capitals of the world and I have borrowed one of their images to show you what it looked like.

Highlight 4. All the touristy stuff we crammed in to such a short time

With such a short stay (only a couple of days) we managed to knock a fair few things off the tourist list and still spend plenty of time relaxing in the pool. Our first tourist stop was Central Markets. I was not super impressed with these to be honest. The building itself was very cool (it is heritage listed) but the markets were fairly expensive and it was all the same stuff. I get that it’s meant to be more of a boutique feel in comparison to the hustle and bustle of the street markets but the quality of the items was fairly similar to the street markets with prices 3 x as much. The outside markets in Kasturi Walk were cheaper and had some great food as well, I think they were more to my taste.

We also stopped in at the Aquaria at KLCC where I saw the cutest sand tiger shark cuddle pile ever and patted a baby bamboo shark. The aquarium wasn’t as big as advertising makes out but for 60R ($20 AUD) it’s great value and the animals appeared happy and well cared for.

Near the Aquauria is Petronas Twin Towers which are an iconic landmark here and very impressive to look at….but a pain in the ass to go up! You have to pre-book a ticket (80R so about $26 AUD) and then you just shuffle along in a giant queue to get your trip up in the elevator. If you rock up on the day, they are nearly always fully booked with no tickets available and a very long line. The crowds moving towards the lift, up, across the sky walk and down are HUGE and I would have felt immensely claustrophobic so we gave it a miss and satisfied ourselves with pretty daytime photos from the KLCC Park which is an amazing open air water park next door. Maybe next time.

On another day, we went to the KL Bird Park which was pretty impressive….despite my fear of birds!! It was only 63R per adult (so about $21 AUD) to get in and it’s the largest walk through aviary in the world. There were lots of different birds and opportunities to interact with them, plus some SUPER DUPER cute little monkeys. Most of the birds seemed happy and well looked after but we did note the ostriches were missing feathers and appeared quite distressed.

When asked what he wanted to do in KL, B said all he really wanted was to seek out some Hawker Centres as he loved the food in those places in Singapore…so I did some research and discovered Jalan Alor and Lot 10 Hutong Food Court. We didn’t end up going to Jalan Alor but stopped by Lot 10 while I was cheap suitcase shopping at Sungei Wang Plaza shopping complex. Lot 10 is definitely very tourist oriented but still had lots of cheap food stalls in one accessible location and was great as a middle of the day option.

We visited the KL Eco Park Tree Canopy Walk which is free and very pretty. Our suggestion would be to get dropped off at the KL Tower car park if you’re not very fit as the whole canopy walk is then downhill….but it’s still doable going the other way. See image below for the two potential drop off points in red (upper end near KL Tower, all downhill) and yellow (uphill but only slight + short bursts of stairs, the yellow drop off is the entrance point).

As we started at the bottom of the KL Eco Park we ended up at the KL Tower at the end. We visited the KLTower mini zoo (31R each so $10AUD) which was really interactive and a great example of a zoo trying to help out those animals inadvertently finding themselves in the city with no other options for rehab. They had monkeys, turtles, a goat, alpacas, snakes, ferrets, prairie dogs and even baby emus!

Since we were standing next to it, we then went up the KL Tower which had a 49R observation option and 99R skybox option….where else in the world can I do a sky box for $35AUD? Be warned the wait times are long at the top though, they don’t police the photo times enough and people can be jerks. We went on a non-busy day with a short line and it was close to a 90 minute wait for a photo with no chairs in sight. Kinda worth it though.

My last touristy activity was Chinatown. For the Chinatown visit, I left B at the hotel with his computer for company and went with my friend Fiona. She is a mad-crazy shopper and had a great time filling her extra suitcase, I’ll admit I filled in all my extra packing space as well 🙂 I got replica Nike’s for 90R, some very cool sunglasses with rubber arms for 100R, Birkenstock knock offs for 30R and a new travel shoulder bag for 30R. All up that’s about $85 AUD.

Places I want to see next time we visit: Petronas Towers, elephant sanctuary, Batu Caves, the firefly dance, the butterfly garden, Jalan Alar (Wong Ah Wah – roast pork dark noodle and BBQ chicken wings get repeated mention. Satay from here also gets a good write up. My extensive research also brought up repeated mentions of Meng Kee next to Wong ah Wah which does all sorts of grilled seafood, Pin Chen Haianese Chicken Rice – the best of many in the street – and Gou Lou who make infamous Tom yum soup and fish head noodles), the FRIM tree top canopy walk (when it reopens), Sunway Lagoon fun park, LegoLand (it’s only an 8hr drive away dammit), the palace, maybe the hop on hop off bus annnnnd I’m sure many others I haven’t thought of!

Mini-break at Thredbo

Snow, snow, snow, snow….snow!

5:30am wake up on day 1 (bleh) for the 3hr drive up to Thredbo, which included a stop for snow chains. Because….snow! SNOW!

When we arrived at 9am, B happily went off to frolick on the mountain while I went had a massage at Edelweiss Day Spa (90 min hot stone). It was glorious. I did have to prebook 2 weeks in advance though, they fill up quick. Sandra was amaaaazing and even went slightly over time because I was early.

After the massage, B and I ended up having lunch together at the bistro pub because some of the chairlifts were closed. Then he went back to his happy place (up the mountain, with the snow) and I relaxed on the lounges at one of the local bars while waiting to check in to our accomodation. See, this is me…relaxing….

Below is what B did all day. Not relaxing at all in my opinion. I like to look at snow but not actually ski or board in it….I’m more a snow bunny these days than a skier. Give me warm cider, a book and a comfy lounge by the fire any day.

We went with new accomodation this time because I was fed up with paying $550 a night for such shitty guest service and soundproofing at River Inn. Celesial 3 is a self contained apartment in the Thredbo Village and was cheaper than River Inn. It’s a bit of a hike (it’s on Bobuck Lane, to the far left of the village) but there is a bus every 15 mins and it’s walkable. Sort of. Well, it’s not the worst walk anyway – there were definitely other ones higher up! So far, I’m very happy with the view and the layout of the apartment.

Dinner was at “The Mad Mexican” at House of Ullr which turned out to be quite close to our apartment. Being a Friday night in school holidays, I made sure we had prebooked a few weeks ago which was a good move – they were fairly busy and were turning people away. The food was DELICIOUS with the cheese and chicken quesadilla the absolute highlight.

After dinner came the walk back up the hill to the apartment. Arrrrrrgh. Should have caught the bus. Never again.

Day 2 started off with beautiful blue skies up on the mountain and me REALLY looking forward to half a day at the day spa.

Unfortunately, Mr Snowboarder had other plans!

He managed to fall awkwardly and break at least two of the bones in his wrist, probably all of them. More scans and follow ups to come this week….poor fella 😕 we checked out a day early and drove straight back to Canberra so he could have a comfy bed to enjoy his good drugs. Oh, and (carefully controlled) doggy snuggles.

Singapore booked for NYE 2017

Woohoo! Flights were unbelievably cheap so we booked them today. We spent our airport wait in Melbourne today looking at cool things to do, including:

Visiting Universal Studios!

The Singapore Flyer, hopefully at night time as I’ve been told the city lights are amazing

The tree top walk (I am slightly terrified about this one)
And of course….relaxing! Hotel Fort Canning is both central and a beautiful resort to chill out in.

Day 8 – A magical meal, the great debate and drag cabaret fun as the trip finishes

So, about 5 months ago we knew we were going to come Melbourne this week. The decision to come for this exact week was made for a number of reasons but because we had so much notice of the specific dates we would be definitely be here, we decided to choose a “one off” restaurant to enjoy a meal at. We have done this a few times now (A5-11 in Tokyo 2014, a Michelin starred restaurant in Niseko for NYE 2013, the Hyatt’s degustation menu on Sydney Harbour 2015, Cardor in France 2015, Rockpool in Sydney 2016 + the various chef hatted places we have enjoyed in Canberra…..) and it’s always an amazing experience.

Despite the fact I was booking 4+ months in advance, it was almost impossible to get a dinner reservation at a reasonable time for one of the two that I wanted – Dinner with Heston Blumenthal or Vue de Monde. Eventually, I settled for a lunch booking at Dinner with Heston Blumenthal which is at Crown Towers.

The Chefs

Heston Blumenthal & Ashley Palmer-Watts

Insatiably curious and entirely self-taught, Heston Blumenthal has become famous for his unique, ground-breaking approach to the dining experience. At Dinner by Heston alongside Ashley Palmer-Watts, the two chefs have created a contemporary menu inspired by the tastes and flavours of British and Australian history.
Heston received the World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to global gastronomy. The original Dinner by Heston Blumenthal restaurant in London led by Chef Director Ashley Palmer-Watts was ranked number 36, up nine places from last year.

We both got very glammed up and off we went at midday today! My dress had SQUIRRELS on it!! Squirrels!

We selected the five course lunch degustation meal with paired wines. They were very accommodating for my shellfish allergy.

The view was absolutely top notch and B even got a little birthday message on our final farewell snack. The food was very good, although we didn’t feel it was as good as some places we have been to in Canberra which are a little cheaper….however the presentation was clearly a step above what we have ever had before so I suppose it all evens out!

“Meat fruits” was a visually impressive course – apparently it’s what Heston is known for

I have also never been ANYWHERE where my handbag gets its own stool. Seriously. My handbag got better seating than I’ve had in half the comedy venues we have been to over the last week! I couldn’t resist a cheeky photo of the handbag chair….

After resting for 1.5 hours at the hotel to let some of the gluttony (and wine – so much good wine) wear off, we headed next door to the Town Hall for our feature comedy event of this whole trip – The Great Debate. Four rows from the front this year, woohoo for early ticket purchasing.

We came to watch this live  last year and I’ve always watched them on TV before that. This years topic was you’ve gotta fake news to make news.

Note: it broadcasts on TV on ABC April 17th at 8:30pm. Make sure to keep an eye out in the crowd for us!

After the debate we had another short break in the hotel room, then headed to the adults only show YUMMY at the Spiegeltent (giant wooden tent made up of mirrors) which maintains its record as both the most interesting and most impractical venue I’ve ever been to. How to get to know your neighbours REALLY quickly….try cramming hundreds of people in here! Fricking nightmare.

Having previously been to a show at a spiegeltent when it toured Canberra in early 2016, we thought we knew what to expect – amazing acts, naughty dancing and some nuuuuudity. Right?

However, I may have forgotten to mention to B until last night that this particular performance was a drag cabaret. Mostly because I didn’t know! It didn’t dampen our enthusiasm though as we have both been to drag shows before and we know how rowdy they can get 👍

YUMMY was a great combination of drag queens, bio queens and burlesque dancers with humour, singing, dancing, an amazing hoop performer and a good dose of “naughty” thrown in to the mix. I can see why it was the headline act for the Sydney Mardi Gras after party. We both really enjoyed it and it was a great way to end our MICF festival visit for 2017! We hope to be back again for the festival in 2018.

Home time tomorrow and no holidays anywhere exciting for at least six months as the kitchen renovations start soon. After that – Singapore for Christmas/NYE this year!

I’m also looking forward to my hens cruise in January 2018 with Lana, Jess and Tracey!! ❤

Day 7 – laneway art, an adult magic show and Wil Anderson

Happy Easter Friday! I really miss my fur-babies today, if we were at home I totally would have dressed them up with bunny ears and given them dog friendly chocolate. I know they are having a great time with Dan the awesome house sitter though – I doubt they even notice we are gone.

Today started….gingerly. We both slept in but surprisingly felt okay – I think the bacon deluxes inhaled at midnight and the 3 glasses of water before bed helped a lot! I had deliberately planned late comedy stuff today to allow a full recovery period from any Dracula’s cocktail inspired hangovers so it was a nice surprise to wake up feeling reasonably unseedy.

After lazing around until midday and googling “stuff that is open in Melbourne on Good Friday” we went in search of breakfast/lunch food. Laneway food proved fruitful again (thankfully some places were open on Easter Friday) and provided some juicy burgers and cool art.

We were thinking about going to the zoo but it was a bit drizzly and we were both feeling meh. So we spent the afternoon eating rock candy and napping. Our first comedy show of the evening was just down the road from the hotel at the Butterfly Club. Turns out, it’s down an awesome laneway….and has a cute little rooftop space! Probably the most hipster venue we have been to on this trip.

The 5:30pm show was called 2 Guys, 1 Magic Show and No Idea and was one of the smaller “this is not what I do for a living” type gigs which pop up during the festival. It was excellent though and the actual magic parts were pretty cool. I was part of a card trick and that turned out to be B’s favourite trick of the show so – go me!

Afterwards, we wandered around for awhile as our next show wasn’t until 8:45pm. We had some dumplings, ate chocolate fondue, people watched….and then went to see Wil Anderson’s show “Critically Wil” at the Comedy Theatre along with 1000 other people. You can definitely see the difference between him ($78 a ticket with 1000 selling a night) and the English guy we saw the first night ($20 a ticket with a sell out crowd of 70) in the comfort level they have with a crowd and how they manage hecklers….although both are still very funny. I’m a big Wil Anderson fan and enjoyed the show and it’s contemporary focus a lot.

Tomorrow is one of our busiest days of the whole trip: lunch at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, the Great Debate at 5pm and then YUMMY at the Spiegeltent for an adults only late night show.  Then we head home Sunday afternoon 😕 although B says he definitely wants to come back next year! Woohoo.

Day 6 – fairy floss, a puzzle room and DRACULAS!

You know it’s going to be a good day when you start it with fairy floss for breakfast! Another laneway cafe (Issus) produced nutella french toast with mascarpone cheese, berries and fairy floss….mmmm…..

We had a late start to breakfast today because I finally chucked a tantrum about the broken floorboard above our room which meant every time the bed above us moved even a slight amount…there was clicking and creaking noises. It was driving me slowly and surely insane. So we have been moved into a different room on the top floor! Thanks Adara Collins, great customer service.

After brunch (mmmm fairy floss on toast mmmm) we went off to try an escape room called “Secrets of the Brewery” at Escape Hunt Experience on Queen Street in the CBD. The game intro reads:

This was actually my third escape room – I’ve done one in Sydney and The Riddle Room in Canberra with a bunch of students. We finished this one in 45 mins (out of the given 60) and the only downside was the final part wasn’t very clear…so we were still faffing about trying to solve it when it had actually been solved. The couple before us did that too so I’m thinking it was not entirely our fault. It was an easy one so if you have done some rooms before, I recommend trying one that’s a bit harder.

After the puzzle solving, I gave my brain a rest with MORE SHOPPING at Dangerfield in their clearance store on Swanston St. So dangerous….but glorious….but dangerous….but panda themed….argh. Then it was nap time to prepare for Dracula’s Cabaret! I had to get all flamed up in my new Dangerfield pieces with my unicorn hair of course.

The web link to their show is here: http://www.draculas.com.au/melbourne/ and if you’ve never been before it’s well worth it. We have been once two years ago and B really enjoyed it so he actually asked to go again for his birthday. I booked VIP this time to avoid lining up which meant free canapés and bubbles, an easy line up to get in and better seating.

The show this time around was “Resurrection” which feature their top hits over the last 10 years. My favourite was definitely “When I was a sperm….” although there was a really cool version of a Muse song as well.

So much cocktail, so little time.

Such a great night! The other plus side to coming on a Thursday was there was no line to get photos with the cast afterwards….yippee!
